Exploring Tokyo: A Blend of Energy and Tranquility
Government Building
Tokyo is a fast-paced city, and if you've never been to a big city in Asia, the crowds can be quite a shock. But like with all main cities, if you venture away from the main areas, you'll find pockets of peace and calm. I always like to walk between destinations as it gives me a true feel for the place. Tokyo is no exception.
Top Tip: Book in advance! I wanted to go up both the Shibuya Sky and visit the TeamLab Borderless exhibition, but both were completely booked out for my time there. Luckily, the Tokyo Tower still had slots, and I'm sure the Skytree would too, as it's further out from the main hub.
For a great view of the famous Shibuya Crossing, there are a few spots to consider. Starbucks offers a prime view from upstairs, but you need to buy a drink. There's also another paid viewpoint, but for a free option, head to the railway station. A quick Google search will reveal other free viewpoints as well.
If you appreciate architecture, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building dominates the CBD area with its imposing presence. For something uniquely Tokyo, don't miss Godzilla Road and the many streets adorned with bright, colorful signs. The food scene is amazing, with cool bar areas to explore, like the Golden Gai district, which is known for its tiny, atmospheric bars.
The Imperial Palace Gardens are a lovely escape from the city's hustle and bustle. It's a different side of Tokyo and best of all, it's free to visit. Don't miss the serene Meiji Shrine, nestled in a lush forest, or the historic Senso-ji Temple in Asakusa, which is Tokyo's oldest temple and surrounded by traditional market streets.
For anime and manga fans, Akihabara is a must-visit with its bustling shops and themed cafes. The trendy Harajuku district offers a glimpse into Tokyo's youth culture with its quirky fashion and vibrant street art. For a more laid-back experience, visit Ueno Park, which hosts several museums and a zoo, and is particularly beautiful during cherry blossom season.
Whether you're exploring bustling streets or serene gardens, Tokyo offers a fascinating blend of energy and tranquility that's sure to captivate any traveler.
