B IS FOR BATH
Nestled in the rolling hills of Somerset, Bath is a city that oozes charm, history, and elegance. Famous for its natural hot springs and stunning Georgian architecture, this UNESCO World Heritage Site has something for everyone. Whether you're a history buff, an architecture enthusiast, or simply looking for a picturesque getaway, Bath will captivate you with its beauty and cultural offerings.
Overview Of My Whirlwind Day in Bath
Unfortunately, my trip to Bath fell on a rather grey day, which didn’t make for the best photos. To add to the challenge, I only had a day to explore this stunning city. But despite the weather and time constraints, Bath managed to charm me completely.
The Christmas Market was in full swing during my visit, and I was delighted to see how much it has improved over the years. The stalls were beautifully spaced out across the city, creating a more relaxed and enjoyable experience. As I wandered through, I was captivated by Bath’s breathtaking architecture and the incredible age of its buildings. There’s something magical about walking in a place where history surrounds you at every turn.
Step Back in Time at the Roman Baths
Why Visit?
No trip to Bath is complete without a visit to the Roman Baths. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this iconic attraction offers a glimpse into the city’s origins as a Roman spa town. Built around AD 43, the baths are a testament to Roman engineering and their love of relaxation.
What to See:
The Great Bath: This impressive pool, filled with natural thermal water, is the heart of the complex and one of its most photographed spots.
The Sacred Spring: A natural hot spring that has bubbled up for thousands of years, supplying the baths with their warm water.
The Museum: Packed with Roman artifacts like coins, jewelry, and the famous gilded head of Minerva, the museum tells the story of Bath’s ancient past.
Emily’s Verdict
I visited the Roman Baths on a school trip in Year 9 and was fascinated by the history and atmosphere. Unfortunately, I couldn't revisit them this time due to time constraints. I have heard to recommend booking tickets in advance, especially during peak seasons, as they often sell out. Advance booking also offers a slight discount compared to on-the-door prices. I look forward to returning and exploring this iconic site at a more leisurely pace.
2. Marvel at Bath’s Famous Crescents
Why Visit?
Bath’s crescents are architectural masterpieces that showcase the city’s Georgian elegance. Walking along these grand streets feels like stepping into a Jane Austen novel. With seven crescents scattered across the city, each has its own unique charm and story to tell.
What to See:
The Royal Crescent: The most iconic of them all, this sweeping row of 30 terraced houses overlooks a lush green lawn. Its grandeur is unmistakable and has been a favorite spot for filmmakers and visitors alike.
The Circus: A perfect circle of Georgian townhouses adorned with intricate carvings and surrounded by towering trees. During the Christmas season, it comes alive with the spirit of the holidays as a traditional carol service is held here.
Camden Crescent: Nestled on a hill, this crescent offers panoramic views of Bath. Its charm lies in its slightly quieter and less-visited nature.
Lansdown Crescent: Slightly off the beaten path, Lansdown Crescent boasts a serene atmosphere and impressive architecture.
Somerset Place: Once undergoing renovations, this crescent has emerged as a stunning mix of history and modern living.
Widcombe Crescent: Overlooking the city, this crescent is smaller but offers a cozy, picturesque feel.
Walcot Crescent: A lesser-known gem that adds to Bath's charm with its understated elegance.
Did You Know? The Royal Crescent served as a filming location for Oliver! The sweeping views and historical backdrop made it perfect for scenes in this classic film.
Emily’s Verdict
I loved exploring Bath’s crescents, particularly the Royal Crescent. Even on a grey day, their elegance stood out, and I could only imagine how stunning they’d look under a blue sky or lit by golden sunlight. Each crescent has its own personality, and the Circus felt particularly magical with the thought of Christmas carols echoing through its circle.
Bath’s crescents are a photographer’s dream and a must-see for anyone visiting the city. Whether you’re admiring their architecture or soaking in their atmosphere, these crescents encapsulate Bath’s timeless charm.
4. The Skyline Walk: A Breathtaking Perspective
Why Visit?
For those seeking panoramic views of Bath and its picturesque countryside, the Bath Skyline Walk is an unmissable experience. This six-mile circular trail winds through peaceful woodlands, vibrant meadows, and hilltops, offering spectacular vistas of the historic city below.
What to See:

Woodland Trails: A calming escape into nature, where the hustle and bustle of Bath feels a world away.
Meadow Vistas: Sweeping views of Bath’s historic skyline and the rolling hills of the Avon Valley.
Emily’s Verdict
The Skyline Walk gave me a completely different perspective of Bath that you just can’t get from wandering the city streets. The full loop is about seven miles, but honestly, if you’re short on time, you don’t need to do the whole thing to enjoy the best views. The main panoramic spots over the city can be reached by heading up to Sham Castle or walking the beginning of the trail before you enter the woodlands. (anywhere between the two yellow dots) From there, you get breathtaking views of Bath’s iconic architecture nestled in the hills.
The trail also takes you past Bath Rugby’s playing fields and a golf course, adding a bit of variety to the walk. For me, it was the perfect mix of fresh air, history, and incredible scenery. Even on a grey day, the views were totally worth it. If you’re after an experience that combines a bit of exercise with stunning sights, this is a must.
Add-On Adventure: Prior Park Landscape Garden
If you’re up for more exploration, why not detour to the nearby Prior Park Landscape Garden? It’s a National Trust Property. This enchanting 18th-century garden is home to the famous Palladian bridge, one of only four of its kind in the world. Wander through the gardens to soak in the peaceful ambiance and timeless beauty.
Plan Your Visit:
Prior Park requires a separate ticket, and purchasing in advance is recommended. You can find more information and book your tickets on their website.
