The Route ‑ Waverley Medieval Circular

This route can be found on the amazing alltrails app. A must for anyone who likes to walk. To get to the beginning there is plenty on the roadside by the pub called barley mow in Tilford. The distance of the walk is 10km and total elevation is 337m.

Overview ‑ The route starts by the village pub and you quickly pass along a river and follow a trail through the woods. Eventually you come out near the ruins. You follow the sign for Waverley abbey and make your way along a river bank passing the beautiful house. You can then visit the ruins. After you go back on yourself and then passing some beautiful houses. You then make your way up the hill to reach the top with a great view. Afterwards you descend down and pass more beautiful houses before making your way back to the pub again.

Tilford ‑ River Wey

The beginning of the walk, is in Tilford, there is a river and a pub and has easily accessible parking here. You cross over this river and then your path is just up to the left where you follow up through the trees just behind the houses.

Woodland Wander

After passing the river you go along a path going through beautiful woodlands and passing a few gardens of houses on your right. The path twists and turns and depending on the time of year will depend on the foliage. You then pass this cute little building, which I am not sure what it is used for. Before descending gently down towards a road.

River to the Ruins

Once you get to the end of the woodland section you make your way along a short section of road. You meet a tiny river and little house, here is where you turn and follow the river towards the ruins. You will pass the Waverley mansion and get to a beautiful bridge and turn left to go into the English Heritage site.

Waverley Abbey and the Amazing Tree

As you walk around the site, seeing different sections of what must have been an amazing Abbey. You stumble by a Tree which is just extraordinary. The size of the branches compared to the roots, then the roots themselves so intertwinned and looking like tentacles. I have no idea how old it is.

Up to the Top

After you re trace your steps back pass the river, you head past a beautiful house and through some woods and up the hill for a great view over Surrey. After seeing the spectacular vista you make your way back through country lanes passing spectacular houses. and then end up back at the car.
